Final Poster Edit.

April 16, 2010

Maritime Conservatory Poster Final Well, this is the final project for my History of Design class. This is also my final edit. A classmate of mine found a spelling error in the other one, which reminds me again why you should get people to check over your work before you hand it in. I also made some of the copy under the main title a bit smaller. When I printed it out it just looked like crap, but it’s all fixed now. My teacher keeps telling me to get away from turquoise so I ended up going with the mauve purple colour. You can’t really see it that well, but there’s a floral texture under everything. When you print it out it looks fantastic. :) I’m really happy with it. I was also thinking about making this into a desktop wallpaper but I just haven’t got around to it yet.

Everything in school is winding down. We’re all handing out last assignments in, trying to bump our marks up and making plans for an outing we can have. It’s kinda sad, you spend two years with a bunch of awesome people and then all the sudden school’s over. :( We’re having a pizza party in class today in lieu of a client we picked up a few weeks ago for a horse logo. Mm, nothing like free pizza.

In other news, this time next week I’ll be (well, right now sleeping) in another province at a car show. I’m not bringing any homework or any type of work with me. Although by then I shouldn’t have any, anyway. I can’t wait to just have a few days to do nothing.

After a week of messing around in Illustrator and asking a bunch of friends for help with words, I’m done. One thing off my list, 1,000 more to go.

Double Page Spread.

Finished my double page spread assignment. :)

Got my work-term!

April 3, 2010

So I’ve been hired for my five week work term at World Color! I’ll be (hopefully!) doing a mixture between pre-press, photography and designing. I’m super exited to get started. The lovely lady that has hired me is already a part-owner at the place I work at now, she definitely knows what she’s talking about and is passionate about it. It’s so much easier to pay attention to people that are passionate about something. It’s hard not to get caught up in their enthusiasm.

At my regular job, she got me to do product shots for an upcoming flyer for the store. I’ve never used soft boxes, done product photography or had any lessons on how to set things up so they look nice… did I mention I’ve never used a Canon either? Because this was my first time haha. She gave me a crash course in lighting, how to use it, how things should be set up and I improvised with white tissue paper as my white backdrop. Then she left me to my own devices and went home for the night. I panicked a little and then just got down to business. I messaged one of my photographer friends, Mosher, and he was helping me out with the settings you would normally have for what I was doing. I guess they turned out alright because she said I did a good job! Score.

In other cool news, we had a client at school come in to get us to design a masthead for a new NSCC Aviation magazine. They picked mine!

Hopefully I’ll get a copy of the first issue that comes out. I can’t wait to see it. :)

I also designed myself a new business card to match the website.

Aside from all the exciting work/school related news I found out that I have Carpel Tunnel.

I’ve been having a lot of problems with my right wrist and me being the Hypochondriac I am went to the Doctor and had a specialist appointment made. Sure enough, there’s something wrong. It’s only the very beginning of it, but it still sucks. I get this really painful pins and needles feelings in the tips of my fingers, wake up in the middle of the night with my whole arm cold and numb. It’s weird. I’ve been wearing a brace everyday as much as I can since the appointment to slow it down.

I have a weird phobia with people touching my wrists or grabbing them so I’ll do everything in my power to not have the operation. Since wearing my brace straight for 5 days my wrist, right now, is back to normal. :)

I’ll be buying myself a new $800 present soon. Let’s just say it’s superrr widely wicked.
